New City Program Helps Marshall Residents Replace Ash Trees
Marshall residents have been actively engaging with a new city program aimed at helping them remove and replace ash trees affected by the emerald ash borer.
Launched earlier last week, the Ash Tree Removal and Replacement Reimbursement Program, funded by a $329,080 ReLeaf Grant, offers residents up to $200 for ash tree removal and $100 for planting new trees.
The initiative is a proactive measure as the invasive beetle continues to threaten local tree populations. The program has already seen significant interest, with multiple inquiries and applications filed.
Tree removal, however, must be done between November 1 and May 1 to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer, which is less active during colder months.
Homeowners need to work with licensed contractors, and new plantings must adhere to city-approved species lists.
This program aims to maintain Marshall's tree population while ensuring the landscape adapts to the environmental challenges posed by the emerald ash borer.
For more details, residents can visit the Marshall city website or contact the Parks and Recreation office for assistance.
Get Ready for SMSU Homecoming: A Full Week of Festivities, Football, and Fun!

The 2024 Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) Homecoming is shaping up to be a vibrant celebration of Mustang pride, packed with events for students, alumni, and the Marshall community now to October 13.
Wednesday's Day of Service offers opportunities for community involvement, including Adopt-A-Highway cleanups and park improvements.
Sports fans can look forward to women’s soccer and volleyball games on Friday, leading into Saturday’s Homecoming Parade and the Game Day Roundup, which features tailgating, food trucks, live music, and inflatables.
The Southwest Celebration, honoring distinguished alumni and showcasing campus projects, is a highlight of the week, requiring pre-registration for attendees.
Saturday’s events culminate with the Homecoming football game against Wayne State, followed by Sunday’s soccer match against the University of Sioux Falls.
Throughout the week, there’s something for everyone—sports enthusiasts, community members, and alumni alike can all join in the fun of SMSU’s time-honored traditions.
