NOW IN TOP 4: Vote Now! Help Action Trackchair Win Coolest Thing Made in Minnesota
The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with BMO, has announced the top four finalists for the first-ever "Coolest Thing Made in Minnesota" contest.
This competition highlights the state's manufacturing innovations, and among the finalists is the Action Trackchair, a groundbreaking all-terrain wheelchair produced in Marshall.
The contest has reached the final round, with public voting open until October 4th at 4:00 PM.
The ultimate winner will be unveiled during the 2024 Manufacturers' Summit on October 8th.
This is a fantastic opportunity to support Marshall's local business, Action Trackchair, by casting your vote! Let’s help them earn the recognition they deserve as the "Coolest Thing Made in Minnesota."
Tough Choices Ahead for Lyon County Landfill as Waste Increases

The Lyon County landfill, currently at its mid-life stage, is confronting several challenges that will influence its future operations.
In addition to space limitations, evolving environmental regulations on construction and demolition waste, along with PFAS chemicals, are crucial factors shaping long-term planning.
Waste from multiple counties contributes to landfill capacity, with stable municipal waste intake and fluctuating industrial waste levels. A growing influx of construction debris due to nearby landfill closures adds pressure on Lyon County’s facility, and authorities are strategizing how to address the increased waste flow.
Officials are also focusing on waste reduction and recycling goals, with plans to meet the state’s 35% recycling target by 2030.
Some counties in the region have already met the target, but others face significant challenges. The landfill’s administrators are exploring options such as improving industrial waste tracking and encouraging the recycling of building materials and plastics.
The idea of establishing a regional waste coordinator is also being discussed to boost outreach efforts.
The introduction of new programs, like the upcoming tool lending library through the Marshall-Lyon County Library, reflects efforts to promote reuse and keep items out of landfills.
Initiatives like diverting clean Styrofoam coolers and encouraging donations to thrift stores also aim to reduce waste in the region.
