Marshall Explores Golf Cart Regulations, Seeks Public Feedback in October

The Marshall City Council is considering whether to allow golf carts on city streets, a topic that has sparked mixed opinions among its members.

The ordinance would regulate the use of golf carts, restricting them to streets with speed limits of 30 mph or less and requiring essential safety features like seatbelts, headlights, and slow-moving vehicle emblems.

Some council members raised safety concerns, especially regarding the potential for accidents involving larger vehicles.

Additionally, there was concern about fairness and accessibility, with one member pointing out the financial barriers for residents who may not be able to afford golf carts that meet the required safety standards.

Others, however, were more open to the idea, believing it should move forward with community input.

The council has scheduled a public hearing on October 22, encouraging residents to voice their opinions before making a final decision.

The potential benefits of this ordinance include increased mobility for residents, especially in quieter neighborhoods, but the debate largely revolves around balancing convenience with ensuring the safety of all road users.

Marshall Council Weighs 9.8% Property Tax Hike for 2025: Public Meeting Set for December

The city of Marshall is considering a property tax increase of up to 9.8% for 2025, following a preliminary vote by the city council.

Initial projections had the levy as high as 14%, but it was reduced due to concerns about the financial impact on residents.

The proposed increase is driven by rising insurance costs, debt service, and an expansion of the capital equipment fund.

The city also faces declining revenues from gas and cable franchise fees. A final decision will be made in December after a public budget meeting.
