Aquatic Center Revamp: Marshall Selects Contegrity to Lead Project Amid High Costs

After receiving construction bids for the new Aquatic Center that far exceeded the estimated budget by $6 million, the Marshall City Council faced tough decisions to keep the project moving.

To address the challenge, they opted to hire a construction manager, selecting Contegrity Group, a firm known for its experience in local government projects, including the expansion of the Lyon County Government Center.

The council's initial decision to reject the bids earlier in the month led to a redesign process by Stockwell Engineers to find ways to lower costs without compromising the project's quality. While redesign efforts were underway, the idea of using a construction management firm was brought up as a more efficient approach to navigate rising costs and avoid further delays.

City staff reached out to five construction management firms, two of which were general contractors who had initially bid on the project, while the remaining three were firms experienced in managing aquatic centers and public projects. A selection committee, which included city staff and council members, reviewed each firm’s proposal, focusing on qualifications, experience, and their ability to work collaboratively with Stockwell Engineers.

The choice of Contegrity Group came after an in-depth interview process. Their proposal, which included an initial cost of $64,350 for pre-construction services and $364,650 for the construction phase, was deemed cost-effective compared to other firms.

Additionally, the council noted that on-site supervision would cost an estimated $25,000 per month over the 18-month construction period. Despite the high costs, the council saw this as the best way forward to ensure the project’s completion while still working to reduce the overall budget.

There was a sense of urgency among council members to make a decision swiftly, as delaying the process could lead to further challenges. The council ultimately voted to negotiate the final terms with Contegrity Group, trusting that their experience and local ties would help the project succeed.

The Aquatic Center project, designed to bring new recreational opportunities to the Marshall community, remains a top priority, and the city is committed to finding the best way to move forward despite financial hurdles.

Marshall Fire Department Hosts Open House for Fire Prevention Week: Join the E.D.I.T.H. Drill

As Fire Prevention Week approaches, the Marshall Fire Department is gearing up to spread awareness about the importance of working smoke alarms and emergency preparedness at home.

This year's campaign, themed "Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You," emphasizes the life-saving potential of properly maintained smoke alarms.

The department is encouraging residents to join in an exit drill on October 6th to practice their home fire escape plans.

To further engage the community, the department is also hosting their annual open house on October 10th starting at 5:30 PM with demonstrations and activities for all ages.

The E.D.I.T.H. drill (Exit Drills in the Home) encourages families to plan and practice two escape routes in the event of a fire.

Residents are asked to participate by turning on their outdoor lights once the drill is completed, allowing firefighters to confirm involvement as they patrol the city.

Marshall residents are also reminded of essential smoke alarm maintenance tips: test alarms monthly, change batteries twice a year, and replace units every 10 years. Additionally, carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced every five years to ensure safety.

The department, comprising 41 firefighters and three hazardous materials technicians, ensures its readiness through rigorous training and regular safety inspections.

The community is invited to learn more about fire safety and prevention during the open house, with activities designed to educate both children and adults.
