$9.9 Million Federal Grant Brings Telemedicine to Southwest Minnesota Ambulances

Ambulance services in southwest Minnesota are set to improve significantly thanks to $9.9 million in federal funding awarded to Southwest Minnesota EMS.
The funding will provide telemedicine services to 109 ambulances across 18 counties.
This initiative, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program, introduces Avel eCare technology, allowing EMS teams to connect with emergency physicians and paramedics en route to hospitals.
The program aims to enhance trauma care, especially in rural areas where long distances to hospitals can delay critical treatment.
The introduction of Avel eCare is expected to reduce traffic-related fatalities by providing quicker access to expert medical guidance during emergency situations.
The pilot program, which started with Murray County Ambulance, showed promising results and has now expanded to other services, such as the Wabasso ambulance.
With rural regions seeing up to 25-minute ambulance response times, this technology offers crucial care in what is often referred to as the "Golden Hour" after an injury, where survival chances are highest.
In partnership with the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Health, the program will also undergo further study to assess its full impact on trauma care.
The initiative brings vital support to EMTs in areas with volunteer shortages and aims to ensure that more patients have access to immediate care during life-threatening emergencies.
