15-Hour Standoff in Rural Minnesota Leads to SWAT-Involved Shooting

A man is recovering in stable condition after a tense 15-hour standoff with SWAT officers in rural Clarkfield, Minnesota.
The situation began when Yellow Medicine County deputies responded to a welfare check around 3:15 p.m. on September 14. The man, armed with a rifle, pointed his weapon at deputies and fled to a nearby home, barricading himself inside.
SWAT teams were called in when negotiations failed. The man fired at officers, prompting return fire that struck him twice—once in the leg and again after he emerged and fired at officers. He was airlifted to Hennepin Healthcare.
The incident spanned two SWAT team rotations. The Kandiyohi-Meeker-Willmar SWAT team handled the first phase, which lasted eight hours. They were then relieved by the West Central and BLR SWAT teams.
Throughout the standoff, the man fired at officers multiple times, leading to his injuries. Fortunately, no officers were harmed during the exchange.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the use of force in the incident, and the community remains on edge as more details emerge regarding the circumstances that led to the standoff.
The quick response of local law enforcement and SWAT teams helped bring the situation under control.
