Murray County’s Former Sheriff Faces Jail for Evidence Mishandling

Former Murray County Sheriff Steven Telkamp pleaded guilty this week to charges of misconduct, admitting to mishandling a blood sample from a 2022 DWI investigation.
The case stemmed from a single-vehicle crash involving the officer, after which Telkamp failed to properly preserve a blood sample taken as part of a DWI investigation.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension never received the sample.
As part of his plea agreement, Telkamp will serve probation, 21 days in jail, and complete community service.
He stepped down from his position in 2022 and chose not to run for re-election.
The incident has raised concerns about mishandled evidence and its impact on legal proceedings, as the compromised blood sample hindered further investigation.
This plea concludes the legal matters surrounding the misconduct case, marking the end of Telkamp's career in law enforcement.
Transition in Leadership at Avera Marshall: New Chair, Board Members

Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center has made notable updates to its governing board with the addition of two new members, Karie Novak and Tom Lorang, at the start of the new fiscal year.
Novak, a physical therapist from Tyler, brings over two decades of healthcare experience. Lorang, an executive coach and former educator, has a background in education and mental health services.
Their expertise is expected to add valuable insights to the board.
In addition to these new members, the board is also undergoing leadership changes. Amanda Sieling has assumed the role of chairperson, following George Jorgensen’s tenure.
Dr. Jill Vroman has been named the new vice chair. Several long-serving board members, including Jorgensen, completed their terms, contributing years of service to advancing healthcare in the region.
The board, which includes representatives from both the Avera system and the local community, plays a crucial role in shaping healthcare governance for the region.
The addition of new voices and leadership is aimed at ensuring continued growth and adaptation to meet regional health needs.
