Drug Task Force Busts Large-Scale Narcotics Operation in Balaton

On September 2, 2024, a routine traffic stop in Balaton took a serious turn when the Brown Lyon Redwood Renville Drug Task Force, working with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, uncovered a substantial amount of illegal drugs and cash.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of a 26-year-old woman from Balaton.

During the search, authorities discovered over 70 grams of methamphetamine, about 2 grams of cocaine, more than 2 pounds of marijuana, a variety of prescription pills, and over $14,000 in cash, all of which were found packaged in a way that suggested they were intended for distribution.

The case is now in the hands of the Lyon County Attorney’s Office, where the suspect faces possible charges for first-degree sales and possession of controlled substances.

Lyon County Braces for 5.7% Tax Levy Increase in 2025

Lyon County might see a bigger jump in its 2025 tax levy than usual. County Administrator Loren Stomberg shared a budget proposal with county commissioners, pointing to a possible 5.7% increase from 2024, which would add more than $922,000 to the levy.

This is a noticeable rise compared to the typical 1% to 2% increases seen in recent years.

The county is grappling with rising costs for health and property insurance, lower interest rates, and changes in county aid funding, all contributing to the need for a higher levy.

There are some potential bright spots, like the possibility of paying off bonds for the Government Center early, which could free up some financial resources.

While commissioners are open to starting discussions with the proposed 5.7% increase, they’re also looking for ways to trim it down before finalizing the levy later this year.
