108-Unit Apartment Complex Proposed for Marshall Gains Approval

The Marshall City Council recently considered a proposal to construct three new apartment buildings within the city.

The council granted approvals for several aspects of the project, including a permit to allow the apartments to be built in a general business district.

Kuepers, Inc., a Brainerd-based development and construction company, is behind the project.

The plan is to build a 108-unit apartment complex called Stone Meadows on land situated along Clarice Avenue, behind the former Shopko building. The complex will consist of three buildings, each housing 36 apartments.

The proposal required a conditional use permit to allow multifamily housing in a general business district.

The Marshall Planning Commission had already reviewed and recommended approval of the permit earlier this month. The council meeting saw little discussion or public input, although there were some concerns about how the new development might impact traffic in the area.

However, it was noted that the location, being in a commercial zone, should be equipped to handle increased traffic.

The council unanimously approved the conditional use permit and also gave the nod to two related items. These included the introduction of the plat for the development and modifications to a land covenant. The land in question has restrictions on residential development, controlled by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., which require consent from Walmart and nearby property owners. Any changes to these restrictions will need approval from the Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust.

The Note Gallery Closes Shop, but Music Lessons Play On

After more than ten years as a staple on Main Street in Marshall, the Note Gallery is closing its retail storefront.

Despite this change, the Schreier family, who owns the business, has made it clear that their commitment to music education remains strong. While the shop will no longer sell instruments and music supplies, lessons will continue in a new location.

The Note Gallery was founded by Sue Schreier and her family in 2012, offering both retail music products and music lessons.

Over time, the focus shifted increasingly toward music education.

Following Sue Schreier's passing in May 2023, her family faced the difficult decision to close the retail portion of the business.

As the store prepares to close by the end of September, Terry Schreier, who has been running the business since his mother's passing, will continue to offer music lessons at a new space in Tiger Office Park on East Main Street, starting October 1.

While the storefront will no longer be part of Main Street, the Schreiers are dedicated to continuing the legacy of music education that the Note Gallery has provided to the community.

The closure of the retail space will not affect ongoing lessons, ensuring that students continue to receive the high-quality instruction they have come to expect.
