Thunderstorm Causes Power Outages Northeast of Marshall

The Marshall area was hit by a severe thunderstorm on Thursday morning, with heavy rain and lightning sweeping through the region around 11:00 AM

Despite the storm's intensity, Marshall itself seemed to escape with minimal damage, according to Marshall Parks and Recreation Superintendent Preston Stensrud.

He noted that most of the setup for the Sounds of Summer festival had already been completed prior to the storm, so there were no significant delays in preparation. Stensrud planned to inspect the city parks for any damage later in the day.

However, the storm caused more disruption northeast of Marshall.

Around 11:45 AM, Xcel Energy reported that about 475 customers in the Echo, Wood Lake, and Belview areas were without power due to weather-related issues.

Crews were actively working to restore electricity by Thursday afternoon.

Marshall Residents: Chip Sealing Project Closes Streets for the Day

Today, several streets in Marshall are closed to parking as crews work on chip sealing the road surfaces.

The city announced that Pearson Bros., Inc. has placed “No Parking” signs along the affected routes to ensure a smooth process.

The streets impacted include Channel Parkway, Susan Drive, Tiger Drive, and Lyon Street, along with several residential streets in the northern part of Marshall.

Residents were required to move their vehicles off these streets by 6 a.m. this morning to allow the work to begin.

The specific streets undergoing chip sealing today include:

  • Channel Parkway

  • Susan Drive (between Clarice Avenue and U.S. Highway 59)

  • Tiger Drive (sections between Minnesota Highway 23 and Highway 19)

  • Commencement Boulevard

  • Lyon Street (between Fifth and Sixth Streets)

  • Soucy Drive, Ranch Avenue, and Winifred Circle

  • Fremont Street (between Ranch Avenue and Pleasant Avenue)

  • Pleasant Avenue (from Sixth Street to the end of the road)

  • West Redwood Street (between Fifth Street and Seventh Street)

The city expects the chip sealing project to be completed by the end of the day, assuming favorable weather conditions.

For any questions or concerns, residents can contact the Marshall city engineer’s office at 507-537-6773.
