Voter Turnout Dips in Lyon County as Fischbach Takes Primary Win
The recent primary election results in Lyon County brought no surprises, with U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach solidly leading her Republican opponent, Steve Boyd.
According to the Lyon County Auditor's Office, Fischbach secured a commanding share of the local votes, a trend consistent with her strong performance statewide, where she captured over 64% of the vote with most precincts reporting.
Voter turnout in Lyon County saw over 1,500 participants, casting ballots to narrow down candidates in two federal races: a U.S. Senate seat and the Congressional District 7 race. Fischbach received 732 votes in the county, while Boyd garnered 341. In the DFL primary for CD7, AJ Peters ran unopposed.
In the DFL primary for the U.S. Senate, Sen. Amy Klobuchar was the clear favorite among Lyon County voters, receiving the most votes.
The Republican primary was more varied, with Joe Fraser receiving the highest number of votes, followed by other candidates with lesser totals.
Overall, 1,083 Republican ballots and 499 DFL ballots were cast in the county, reflecting a lower turnout compared to previous years, likely due to the absence of major statewide or local contests drawing significant attention.
Downtown Renovation Costs Spark Debate at Marshall City Council
The Marshall City Council recently addressed the special assessment for a downtown property affected by the North Third Street reconstruction project.
Property owner Dereck Deutz voiced concerns over the $39,000 assessment, citing its impact on his business renovation plans.
Despite his request for a reduction, the council voted 6-1 to approve the full assessment.
Council members emphasized that altering Deutz’s assessment would require adjustments across all properties involved in the project, which they were unwilling to do.
The assessment covered costs for streetscaping, street improvements, and utility services, with the majority of the expense related to enhancements on North Third Street.
The overall reconstruction project, which cost over $4.38 million, included more than $523,000 in assessments for benefiting property owners.
These assessments will be repaid over eight years with a 5.27% interest rate. The council acknowledged Deutz’s concerns but upheld the assessment to maintain fairness and consistency across all impacted properties.
