Ongoing DEI Efforts Highlighted in Marshall School Board Meeting

The Marshall School Board met on Monday evening to discuss the past year's diversity outcomes and introduce a new plan aimed at enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for the upcoming school year.

This year’s DEI theme, “One District, Many Voices,” will be at the forefront of ongoing discussions, meetings, and workshops planned throughout the year.

Director of Teaching and Learning Beth Ritter provided insights into the concepts of equality and equity while presenting diversity data from the previous school year.

Ritter explained that while equality means treating everyone the same and providing equal resources, equity involves tailoring resources to meet individual needs, ensuring fair treatment and opportunities for all students.

The diversity statistics for Marshall Public Schools last year include:

  • 31 languages spoken

  • 13.9% English learners

  • 17.7% in special education

  • 54.9% White

  • 19.4% Hispanic or Latino

  • 12.2% Asian

  • 6.8% Black or African American

  • 2% American Indian

  • 4.4% identifying with two or more races

  • 0.1% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander and other Indigenous Peoples

The board reviewed current intervention programs and initiatives that aim to ensure all students have access to the necessary learning resources. They highlighted the need for continual adaptation and improvement.

One such adaptation was the introduction of social emotional learning (SEL) teachers to support students’ mental health needs, a response to the increased stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Superintendent Jeremy Williams reiterated the district’s mission to prepare students for success, emphasizing the importance of continually addressing DEI-related issues to foster improvement.

At the end of the month, district staff will participate in a workshop week dedicated to DEI. Workshops will continue throughout the 2024-25 school year.

The Pillsbury House Theatre from Minneapolis will kick off the workshop week with a customized presentation tailored to Marshall Public Schools' DEI efforts. Other sessions will include a multilingual learner student panel, a community partner’s panel, and an American Indian presentation.

The board stressed that the “One District, Many Voices” theme reflects the crucial role of community involvement in district operations. They are committed to considering feedback to enhance learning experiences, ensuring all students have equitable access to education, regardless of their background.

Governor Tim Walz Joins Harris on Democratic Presidential Ticket

Vice President Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the upcoming election.

Walz is known for his work in enacting a progressive Democratic agenda.

The Harris-Walz ticket aims to strengthen Democratic support in the critical Upper Midwest, a region that has swung between parties in recent elections.

Following the announcement, the duo will kick off their campaign with a rally in Philadelphia, followed by visits to key battleground states such as Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada.

Walz brings experience and a track record of bipartisan cooperation from his time as governor, though he also faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest following George Floyd's death.
