Postal Service Under Pressure to Improve Mail-In Ballot Delivery

State election directors voiced concerns about the U.S. Postal Service's ability to handle the expected surge of mail-in ballots for November.

Steven Carter, manager of election and government programs, reassured directors that upcoming reports would show improved performance.

However, directors cited past issues and disruptions from postal facility consolidations as ongoing worries.

Monica Evans, D.C. Board of Elections, noted delays in receiving mail ballots, which forced some to vote in person.

Mail-in voting remains crucial for both parties in 2024.

Bryan Caskey, Kansas elections director, highlighted the impact of delivery delays on voter satisfaction and election outcomes. Association president Mandy Vigil emphasized the need for timely improvements before the general election.

Nineteen senators have questioned Postmaster General Louis DeJoy about the postal service’s readiness for the 2024 elections, pointing out past delivery issues and the impact of consolidations in several states.

DeJoy has paused these consolidations until January 2025 but faces pressure to ensure they don’t cause further delays.
