Raise a Glass to Marshall: Limited Edition Beers Coming Soon

A group of local partners is coming together to showcase the Marshall area community with a unique twist—four exclusive brews from Brau Brothers Brewing.

At the Marshall City Council meeting on Tuesday, Eric Luther, the manager of Tall Grass Liquor, revealed plans for these limited-edition beers that will be available only at the Marshall liquor store.

This project is a collaboration between Tall Grass Liquor, Brau Brothers Brewing, and Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU).

Luther mentioned that these exclusive beers have been in the works for four or five months and are set to launch soon. The target date for the release is August 24, coinciding with the Sounds of Summer weekend in Marshall.

The lineup includes Cultivate Pale Ale, Brew 1872 Amber Ale, Mustang Golden Ale, and Jiminey Jumper Juicy Apple—a special apple-flavored version of Brau Brothers’ Old 56 beer. Luther shared that they are under contract to produce 200 cases of each variety.

The project also involves some city approvals. One agreement allows the use of a historic Marshall railroad depot photo for the Brew 1872 can design, thanks to the Lyon County Historical Society.

Another agreement covers local branding and canning with Brau Brothers. Additionally, there’s a fundraising aspect: $1 from each six-pack and fridge pack of Mustang Golden Ale will be donated to SMSU athletics.

Council members voted to approve all three agreements in a single motion, and Luther expressed excitement about seeing the project come to life.

The partners have put in a lot of effort, and they’re getting close to making these exclusive brews available to the community.

Marshall Adjusts Liquor License Fees After 30 Years

For the first time in decades, Marshall is raising its liquor license fees. This week, the City Council voted to hike the on-sale liquor license fee by $500, with increases for on-sale and off-sale 3.2% malt liquor and temporary licenses as well. The goal is to align Marshall's fees with those of similar-sized cities.

Marshall's liquor license fees have been cut a few times over the past 30 years, from $5,000 in the '90s to $4,200 in the early 2000s, and down to $3,000 in 2018. The new plan sets the intoxicating liquor license fee at $3,500, the 3.2% malt liquor off-sale license at $150, the on-sale license at $300, and the temporary license at $75.

Council member James Lozinski and a local business owner opposed the changes. Lozinski questioned the 18% increase, suggesting that keeping fees low could benefit struggling local businesses. City Clerk Steven Anderson said the increase was based on fees in similar Minnesota cities, where the average is around $3,515.63.

Nearby towns like Willmar, Redwood Falls, Cottonwood, Pipestone, Tracy, and Montevideo have an average fee of about $2,300, with Willmar's fee at $4,000.

Business owner Matt Schnoor emailed concerns, suggesting population size shouldn't be the only factor. He recommended considering the number of licenses per 1,000 residents and the city's specific costs from businesses with liquor licenses.

City Administrator Sharon Hanson mentioned that police calls and background checks for these businesses also cost the city, which they currently don't charge separately for. She argued that increased fees would help cover these costs and create a fairer market, instead of relying on general property taxes.

The Council approved the fee increases with a 5-2 vote, with Lozinski and Steven Meister voting against it.
