Marshall Approves Pay Raises for Mayor and Council Members
Marshall’s mayor and city council members are set to receive salary increases over the next two years. The city council voted on Tuesday to amend ordinances adjusting their pay.
Starting in 2025, the mayor's salary will go up from $11,338.87 to $11,679.04, and then to $12,029.41 in 2026.
For council members, their current salary of $7,172.11 will increase to $7,387.27 in 2025 and $7,608.89 in 2026.
These adjustments align with the salary changes for non-union city employees. Importantly, the new salaries won't take effect until January 2025, after the next municipal election, allowing the public to voice their opinions in November.
The city administrator highlighted the importance of equitable compensation, noting that serving on the council requires a significant time commitment.
Fair pay ensures that a wider range of qualified individuals can afford to run for office, not just those who are financially well-off.
The council approved the salary adjustments with a 6-1 vote, with council member James Lozinski voting against it.
Lozinski later explained that while he wasn't against salary adjustments, he didn't feel comfortable voting for his own raise.
