Making Waves: Bidding Process Begins for Marshall's Aquatic Center

Plans for Marshall’s new Aquatic Center made significant progress on Tuesday as the City Council approved the move to start advertising for construction bids.
The city is now set to accept sealed bids until 2 p.m. on Aug. 29, with a public opening and reading of the bids to follow. If everything goes smoothly, the bids will be reviewed by the council on Sept. 10.
During the council meeting, representatives from Stockwell Engineering discussed the overall concept and construction bid package for the aquatic center.
The total estimated cost for the project, which includes grading, water and sewer work, landscaping, aquatics, and building structures, is around $16.5 million.
Adding safety equipment, concessions equipment, and construction administration pushes the total base bid to about $18.95 million.
There are seven possible alternates for the project, including features like a body slide, a water walk, climbing walls, and shade structures.
Another alternate involves building a privacy wall to screen the center from Highway 19.
The demolition of the existing Aquatic Center is also a possible alternate, estimated at about $330,000. Altogether, these extras could cost around $1.27 million.
The council voted to move forward with advertising for bids, marking a key milestone in a project that has been in the works for six years.
A 2018 study highlighted major issues with the current aquatic center, including significant water leaks, lack of ADA accessibility, and deteriorating mechanical and electrical systems.
In 2023, the state Legislature approved a vote to extend the city sales tax to fund the new aquatic center, raising $18.37 million.
The vote passed in November, and design work began for the new center, which will be located near College Drive and Saratoga Street.
Community donors and organizations have also pitched in to cover some of the additional costs, with around $600,000 received or pledged so far.
Highway 59 South of Garvin Closed for Seven Weeks Starting Today

Another detour on U.S. Highway 59 is starting this week, adding to the one already in place south of Marshall.
This new detour, starting today, will affect Highway 59 south of Garvin, between 201st Street in Murray County and Lyon County Road 14, due to concrete repairs.
Traffic will be rerouted around the construction area via U.S. Highway 14 and County Roads 48, 29, and 5, with this detour expected to last about seven weeks.
Earlier in the summer, work began on concrete repairs on Highway 59 just south of Marshall, causing a closure between Highway 23 and Lyon County Road 6. Traffic there is detoured onto Highway 23, Lyon County Road 35 (South Saratoga Street), and Lyon County Road 6.
Both detours will be active for up to five working days.
The concrete repair project, costing about $4.4 million, is expected to wrap up by October 18, although weather and other factors could influence this timeline.
