Excitement Builds for Prairie Jam with "Lauren Alaina Week" in Marshall

In honor of rising country music star Lauren Alaina, Marshall Mayor Robert J. Byrnes has declared the week of July 15 through July 19, 2024, as “Lauren Alaina Week.”
This proclamation celebrates Alaina’s upcoming performance at the Prairie Jam concert on September 19, 2024.
Known for her hit songs and energetic performances, Lauren Alaina is expected to be a major draw at the Prairie Jam concert, attracting fans from across the region.
The proclamation highlights Marshall’s dedication to hosting talented musicians and promoting cultural events that enhance the community.
Residents are encouraged to participate in activities celebrating Lauren Alaina and her music during this special week.
The aim is to build excitement and foster community spirit leading up to the Prairie Jam event, positioning Marshall as a prime location for top-tier entertainment.
SMSU Hosts Sixth Annual Agronomy Field Day Showcasing Cutting-Edge Research
Southwest Minnesota State University recently held its sixth annual Agronomy Field Day at the Jon Knochenmus Center for Innovation and farm site.
The event featured presentations from SMSU staff, students, interns, and business professionals, highlighting ongoing research and projects. Attendees also enjoyed farm plot tours to see the hands-on work being done.
Agronomy professor Adam Alford and SMSU intern Dante Fertig led the field trials, which serve as demonstrations for students. Fertig, from Arizona, shared his appreciation for Minnesota's farming conditions. Projects included work with wheat, corn, soy, and edamame, focusing on increasing protein content in chips.
Next Gen Ag, an agricultural research company, presented their soybean aphid project findings. David Kee from the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council discussed 26 funded research projects in 2024, covering pest management, genetics, and agronomy strategies.
Matthew Leiphon from the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute introduced a hemp production project for biodegradable erosion control on construction sites.
The SMSU student group Enactus updated on their Mindful Meals project, which delivers home-grown food meals to the community, and their composting initiative, Eco (Enactus Compost Operations), which repurposes reusable waste.
Field tours led by Alford showcased research plots, including a nitrogen rate study, edamame cultivation, pest management, and new garden plots.
Research findings from this summer will be published in the fall.
