Marshall, MN Population Revised

The US Census Bureau just updated the population numbers for Marshall, MN, after some review programs made adjustments. Marshall had a population of 13,890 in April 2020, up from the original count of 13,628. By July 2023, the estimate went up a bit to 13,906.

Back in late 2022, Marshall asked for a review to fix an undercount from the 2020 Census. The lower numbers were mainly because fewer students were around at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) during the COVID-19 pandemic. They wanted to make sure places like college dorms and nursing homes were counted correctly.

The Census Bureau okayed the request in January 2023, but there was a hold-up on the new figures due to some privacy issues.

According to the Census Bureau’s report from May 16, 2024, small and midsize cities like Marshall saw more growth in 2023 compared to 2019, before the pandemic hit.
