Experience WWII History at Memorial Day Screening in Granite Falls

Pioneer PBS and Fagen Fighters WWII Museum are hosting a special Memorial Day screening event on Monday, May 27, at the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum, located at 2450 540th Street in Granite Falls.

This event will be held at the Lenzen-Roe-Fagen Memorial Airport.

The documentary, produced by Tyler Gastecki, features WWII Veteran Robert Holmstrom and his personal experiences on secret missions during the war. It also explores the history of the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA.

Museum admission is $10, but there is no additional charge to attend the screening. Attendees can tour the museum at their leisure before or after their selected screening time and potentially see the warbirds in action, weather permitting. Special guests will be present, and refreshments will be available.

Pre-registration is required due to limited seating, with only 70 guests allowed per screening. Screening times are scheduled for 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2 p.m.

Discovering Southwest Minnesota: 3 Hidden Gems for Summer Adventure

As summer kicks off and the kids are free from school, Southwest Minnesota offers surprises waiting to be explored.

From towering cliffs to ancient traditions, check out these three sites this summer that promise an unforgettable adventure.

Explore Blue Mounds State Park, north of Luverne, known for its 100-foot Sioux quartzite cliff and one of the last purebred bison herds. The park features a tallgrass prairie, wildflowers, and diverse bird species. Enjoy hiking, biking, camping, and the 90-minute Prairie and Bison Tour available on summer weekends.

At Pipestone National Monument, Native Americans continue the tradition of quarrying pipestone for sacred items. Visitors can explore active quarries, tallgrass prairies, quartzite formations, and Winnewissa Falls. The visitor center offers a museum and craft demonstrations.

Step back in time at the Currie Indoor/Outdoor Museum and Park, featuring historical rail transportation. The guided tour includes a ride on a manually operated turnstile and visits to various historic buildings. Open Wednesday-Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with appointments available in spring and fall.
