Highway 23 Roadwork: Plan for Extra Travel Time

Drivers should expect delays and plan for additional travel time on Minnesota Highway 23 starting next week, as announced by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Starting on August 8, resurfacing work will begin on Highway 23 between Florence and Holland.

This construction is part of a larger project to lay new asphalt on approximately 30 miles of Highway 23. The project also includes replacing a culvert near Florence and rebuilding the deck of a bridge near Pipestone.

Throughout most of August, the stretch of Highway 23 between Holland and Florence will be reduced to a single lane.

Traffic will be managed by a flagging operation and a pilot car to guide vehicles through the construction zone. MnDOT advises motorists to drive cautiously, allow for extra travel time, and prepare for delays.

The resurfacing work is projected to be finished by August 30, although this timeline may change due to weather or other unexpected factors.

A detour around the culvert replacement near Florence will remain in effect until August 23. Currently, traffic is being rerouted via Highway 91 and U.S. Highway 14. Once the Florence detour is lifted, a new detour will be put in place for the bridge replacement near Pipestone. This detour will redirect traffic onto U.S. Highway 75 and Pipestone County Road 8 and will be in place until November 1.

MnDOT explained that the Highway 23 project is designed to enhance drainage and provide a smoother driving surface. The total cost of the project is estimated at $11.12 million.
